Attend as an observer

Members of the public are encouraged to attend Council meetings as an observer. You will take a seat in the public gallery area of the Chambers. Observers must conduct themselves in a courteous and respectful manner and are not permitted to interrupt the meeting in any way. Mobile devices must be switched off and the public must remain quiet during the meeting. Placards, posters or signage are not permitted in the meeting, and disruptive behaviour will not be tolerated.

Audio and video recordings of meetings are available for 6 months after the meeting date and can be accessed online or by emailing council@warwyn.tas.gov.au.

Ask a question on notice (Public Question time)

Public questions are encouraged at Council meetings, and there is time allocated at each meeting for this to occur. If you wish to ask a question of Council, you must submit your question in writing prior to the commencement of the meeting. Council Officers or the Mayor may answer the question on the night – or take the question on notice and provide an answer in writing after the meeting.

You must complete the form below in order to submit a question to Council. You can bring the completed form with you on the night. If the question is submitted to Council either in person or via email with at least seven (7) days’ notice of a meeting, the response can be included in the Agenda.

You do not have to wait for a meeting to ask a question of Council – other options include:

Present a petition

To lodge a petition you will need to complete a Petition Form that meets the requirements set by the Part 6 of the Local Government Act 1993.

These requirements are:

 (1)  A person may lodge a petition with a council by presenting it to a Councillor or the General Manager.

(2)  A person lodging a petition is to ensure that the petition contains –

(a) a clear and concise statement identifying the subject matter and the action requested; and

(b) in the case of a paper petition, a heading on each page indicating the subject matter; and

(c) in the case of a paper petition, a brief statement on each page of the subject matter and the action requested; and

(d) a statement specifying the number of signatories; and

(e) at the end of the petition –

(i) in the case of a paper petition, the full name, address and signature of the person lodging the petition; and

(ii) in the case of an electronic petition, the full name and address of the person lodging the petition and a statement by that person certifying that the statement of the subject matter and the action requested, as set out at the beginning of the petition, has not been changed.

Once the form is completed the petition can be handed to a Councillor or to the Council Offices for inclusion on the next available agenda.

If a petition is presented to Council that does not meet the requirements of the Local Government Act 1993, the petition may be accepted but will not be included on a Council Agenda.  Informal petitions can still be used for internal council purposes and can inform discussion on matters.
