Inglis River Walking Track Upgrade

The Inglis River Walking Track is a valued community asset, winding through the scenic Inglis River reserve and providing important recreation and environmental benefits. Council has progressively planned and delivered improvements to ensure the track remains safe, accessible and resilient into the future.

Following extensive studies and planning, two projects have now been funded and are moving into delivery:

Project 5 – Golf Links Rd (Commenced February 2026)

Project 5 works commenced 4 Feb 2026 and be substantially complete before the Easter break.

Council has appointed Contractor AJR Construct Pty Ltd to undertake the works which will include an 18 m span x 2 m wide pedestrian bridge across the creek gully (bridge will be installed parallel to the road) and sections of new boardwalk to both ends.

Key improvements include:

  • Retention of the existing access track/boardwalk to the rivers edge at the east end.
  • A new asphalt overlay to the existing carpark and bollards to delineate the walkway.
  • Removal of the existing timber stair and bridge structures for improved amenity.
  • Retention of the threatened and sensitive paperbark tree ecosystem – the boardwalk will skirt the edge of the paperbarks.

Project 2 – Esplanade to Cemetery (Complete)

Project 2 construction commenced on Monday 22 September 2025 and was completed in December 2025.

This stage addressed long-standing issues of flooding, erosion and safety by relocating the track to higher ground and improving pedestrian connections.

Key improvements include:

  • New 2.0 m wide fine gravel track alignment on higher ground adjacent to The Esplanade.

  • Safer pedestrian crossings with new kerb ramps and signage at the Table Cape Road / Esplanade intersection.

  • Reduced road width at the west end of The Esplanade to improve safety and accommodate the track (with short-term kerbside parking restrictions).

  • Formalised carpark at the end of Austin Street with new asphalt seal, including sealing of Cemetery Road.

  • Removal of old stair structures no longer fit for purpose.

  • Native revegetation works to restore habitat, improve biodiversity, and support key species such as the Azure Kingfisher.

Nearby residents have already been mailed with construction details, including alignment, kerb relocation, and temporary parking changes. Broader community updates will be provided through Council’s website and social media as works progress.

Environmental & Community Outcomes

Both funded projects build on Council’s earlier Options Study and Natural Values Assessment, ensuring that works are designed to:

  • Improve safety and accessibility.

  • Protect the river environment from erosion and flood damage.

  • Enhance biodiversity through targeted revegetation and weed management.

  • Provide long-term amenity for the community and visitors.

Council continues to work closely with Wynyard Landcare to deliver revegetation and habitat restoration as part of these projects.
