Waratah-Wynyard Australia Day Celebrations

Waratah-Wynyard Council invites the community to join in the celebration of Australia Day at Gutteridge Gardens, Wynyard on Friday January 26th. The event will run between 8 am and 10 am and will include a delightful Aussie Breakfast, live entertainment, Citizenship Ceremony and Community Awards.

Mayor Mary Duniam said she is particularly honoured this year to host Australia Day Ambassador Rosalie ‘Rosie’ Martin.  Rosie is a clinical speech pathologist with almost 40 years of experience and the founder of a literacy-focused charity.

“Rosalie was awarded the 2017 Tasmanian Australian of the Year for delivering programs of literacy and parent-child attachment to those not usually offered such opportunity – prison inmates. She continues to lead, gently but audibly, in the expanding conversation of 100% literacy for Tasmania. We are honoured to have her speak at our event“ said Mayor Duniam

Another feature of the day will be the screening of a short acknowledgement that celebrates the culturally significant landscape and Aboriginal connection to the area – a collaborative effort between videographer Mason Doherty, the Circular Head Aboriginal Corporation and Waratah-Wynyard Council.

The event will also include a citizenship ceremony, with eight community members taking the pledge to become Australians on the day.

“Welcoming new citizens into our community is one of my great pleasures as a Mayor. As Australians we all have the opportunity to live and grow in a free society. In return we owe Australia our duty as good neighbours and good citizens. Australia’s future depends on the way we work together.”
