Could you be the new Table Cape Lighthouse tour operator?

Could you be the new Table Cape Lighthouse tour operator?

Are you a history enthusiast with a passion for crafting unforgettable tourism experiences?

The Waratah-Wynyard Council is excited to open the Expression of Interest (EOI) process, seeking a visionary and history-loving tour operator to curate exceptional guided tours at the historic Table Cape Lighthouse.

And if you’re after an office that may well have the best views in the world, maybe this is the opportunity you have been looking for!

The iconic landmark, with its breathtaking views and rich history, has been a significant attraction for both locals and tourists alike since tours began in 2010.

Council is now seeking a passionate storyteller to enhance the visitor experience and promote this extraordinary site to a broader audience.

“The Table Cape Lighthouse has been a popular attraction for many years and Council is excited to partner with a new tour operator keen to share it’s rich history with visitors.” said Mayor Mary Duniam.

“By inviting Expressions of Interest, Council aims to identify a suitably qualified and enthusiastic tour operator who can demonstrate a commitment to sustainable tourism practices, preservation and interpretation of the Lighthouse’s historical significance and an ability to create engaging and immersive experiences for visitors of all ages.”

Expressions of Interest are invited from individuals, community groups or even existing businesses to conduct tours to the top of the Lighthouse on a self-employed, commercial licence basis.

“This is the perfect opportunity for someone to set their own hours and work a seasonal role. It’s definitely not a full time job – but would be perfect for someone with an interest in history and a genuine desire to make a positive impact through the delivery of a compelling tour experience.”

Constructed in the 1880s and first lit on August 1, 1888, interpretation panels at the site tell the story of the community that developed around keeping the lighthouse lit and maintained.

In 2010, Table Cape Lighthouse became the first Commonwealth-operated lighthouse in Tasmania to be open to the public for commercial tours, and one of only 14 nationally at that time.

Table Cape Lighthouse is a heritage-listed structure located in a State Reserve and leased by the Commonwealth to operate as a functioning maritime navigation aid.

Council has been given approval via a licence from the Minister for Parks to offer a sub-licence to operate tours of this important heritage tourism asset.

The closing date for Expressions of Interest is Thursday, August 18, 2023.

Expression of Interest documents can be downloaded below.

Authorised for general media distribution by Shane Crawford, General Manager, Waratah-Wynyard Council on Thursday, August 3, 2023.
