Rotary Park Playground (East Wynyard Foreshore)

Waratah-Wynyard Council is committed to providing high-quality, safe and fun play spaces in the municipality. Before any major changes are made to these play spaces, we want to hear your feedback.

We understand Rotary Park is an important community space and there might be questions about why the playground needs to be replaced. There are three main reasons why it is time to renew the playground:

  • The existing playground doesn’t meet current Australian Standards for playgrounds, which are in place to ensure play spaces are built and remain safe. Council is obliged to follow these standards for any major maintenance or when providing new playgrounds
  • The existing playground is more than 25 years old and is beginning to show signs of wear and tear which could affect how safe it is for children to use
  • We’ve heard community feedback that the existing playground doesn’t meet current community needs, such as it needing to be fenced and for it to cater for both younger and older children

Previously, localised areas of play equipment have been provided in pockets that generally cater for older children. To create a social family hub with a larger playground that provides for a broad age group of 2-12-year old’s, the pockets of small play equipment will be consolidated. This means that the play equipment adjacent Splash, Martin Street and Petunia Street will not be replaced given they are within 1km of the Rotary Park playground. Provided the equipment remains safe in these areas, it will not be removed until after the new playground has been built.

Council has been working closely with the Wynyard Rotary Club on the draft design, given their efforts in providing the existing and popular playground. The proposed design includes new and exciting activities including large tower structures, all-ability swings, a dual flying fox and a brand-new spiral slide, to name a few. The new playground also includes a fence around the entire area, picnic tables, seats, bins and a shade sail area to ensure the whole family is comfortable.

Some of the feedback we’ve heard to date on the proposed design:

  • Include bike racks on the outside of the playground at the main entrance/s
  • It isn’t warm enough to warrant the shade sail
  • It’s a great design that’s quite impressive
  • Add more climbing activities for older children, like nets or a climbing wall

Council anticipates works will commence in February 2020 and aim for the new playground to be open to the public in May 2020. The design will be finalised in October 2019, so the equipment can be manufactured in time for construction.

Community members, including children, are invited to provide feedback on the draft design by submitting a feedback form (below). Feedback closes 29 September 2019.
