Waste & Sustainability Officer

Position:

Waratah-Wynyard Council is seeking a proactive and environmentally conscious Waste and Sustainability Officer to lead waste management initiatives and sustainability programs that support Council’s Net Zero goals and circular economy principles.

This is a permanent full-time position working 75 hours over a 9-day fortnight.

In this role, you will:

  • Implement, monitor, and report on the Waste and Resource Recovery Strategy.
  • Oversee waste operations, including kerbside collections, public bins, and waste transfer stations, ensuring compliance and efficiency.
  • Manage waste service contracts, ensuring performance aligns with Council’s standards.
  • Develop and implement sustainability initiatives within Council and the broader community.
  • Support the calculation and reduction of corporate carbon emissions.
  • Deliver education programs on waste reduction, recycling, and sustainable living.
  • Participate in environmental forums, projects, and advisory panels to drive change.

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Qualifications and/or experience in environmental management, sustainability, waste management or a related field.
  • Knowledge of waste regulations, circular economy principles and best practices in sustainability.
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication abilities.
  • Strong analytical, problem solving and reporting skills.
