Council Recycling Collection

Waratah-Wynyard Council sponsors a fortnightly collection of a 240-litre yellow-lidded wheelie bin on the same day as your weekly rubbish collection.

Public place recycling bins are also being rolled out to the CBD areas in Somerset and Wynyard.

Recent recycling audits suggest the top three contaminants for recycling bins are plastic bags, soft plastics like cling film and meat trays. Please place these items in your general waste bin or better yet, recycle them through the REDcycle scheme bins at most major supermarkets.

All recycling collected from this service is sorted at a materials recovery facility in Spreyton. When there are high levels of contamination, such as incorrect disposal of plastic bags or meat trays, the contaminated collection is disposed in landfill. If we all do our part to correctly sort these materials, we can avoid unnecessary landfill disposals.

All materials collected from recycling bins are transported to the Materials Recovery Facility located in Spreyton, which is owned and operated externally from Council.

At the facility, products are sorted using a range of human and mechanical sorting methods. Once sorted, the materials are sold to buyers, both within Australia and overseas, where they recycle the product into something new.

If you want to know more about recycling and how waste is sorted, check out this video. [1]

Items that may be collected and recycled as part of your regular recycling collection service include:

  • Cardboard – flatten boxes
  • Newspapers and magazines – separate from cardboard, tie in bundles and do not place inside plastic bags
  • Milk and juice containers – washed and flattened, lids removed
  • Glass bottles and jars – wash and remove all caps and lids
  • Aluminium and steel cans – includes food and drink cans, pie trays, clean foil and aerosol cans. Rinse food cans.
  • PET, HDPE and PVC plastic – generally juice, milk and cream plastic bottles, identified by the recycling code number 1,2 or 3 inside the logo which is usually on the base of the bottle

Typically, waste is collected weekly from most areas on the day highlighted in the linked brochure. The colour is representative of your areas collection zone.

When placing your bin out for collection, please make sure that you are using an approved recycling bin which can be identified by a serial number stamp on the side and by its yellow lid. Please also ensure that:

  • The bin is placed out on time – we recommend doing so the night before your scheduled collection day as there is no guarantee the collection truck will arrive at the same time as previous weeks
  • The wheels are facing away from the kerb
  • The wheelie bin is as close to the kerb as possible
  • It is on level ground
  • It is at least one metre away from other wheelie bins and other obstructions such as trees and power poles which would obstruct the mechanical arm of the truck
  • The lid is fully shut on the bin
  • There are no additional items placed on top or around the bin

In some small cul-de-sacs it may be necessary to place the bins together at the entrance to the cul-de-sac ere the road is usually straighter, as the mechanical arm may have difficulties reaching bins that are placed on the curved parts of the kerb.

Collection services begin early in the morning and there is no guarantee that it will occur the same time on collection days. Collection can occur anytime between 6am and 6pm.

To ensure your bin is ready for collection, please place the bin kerbside before 6am on the scheduled collection day. We recommend doing so the night before your scheduled collection.

No additional collection will be provided to properties where the bin wasn’t placed out in time for collection.

If you’ve placed the bin on the kerb in time for collection and your bin has not been collected, please contact Council on 6443 8333.

Recycling wheelie bins (with a yellow lid) are attached to the property, which means you shouldn’t take them with you when you move.

Council will provide one recycle bin per rateable property free of charge.

Replacement bins, including those that are to replace vandalised or lost bins, will attract a fee. To request a new or replacement recycling bin, please contact us [4].
