Wilkinson Street closure supported at December Council meeting

11 December 2018

Waratah-Wynyard Council has supported the recommendation of the Department of State Growth to initiate the process of notification of intent to close Wilkinson Street access to the Bass Highway.

At the December meeting on Monday night Council resolved to commence notification in accordance with Section 14 of the Local Government Highways Act 1982; and to undertake investigations into relocation of the existing York Street bus stop to another area within the vicinity.

The recommendation for the closure comes from the Department of State Growth’s proposed safety improvements in their current upgrades to Wynyard highway junctions.

Council will also seek approval from Crown Lands and Parks & Wildlife services to repair the damaged coastal area and restore the footpath in Anzac Park, Somerset, following coastal erosion.

The footpath was damaged during July and August of 2018 when severe king tides, wind and low-pressure systems resulted in erosion along the coastline. A budget amendment of $35,600 was approved for this work.

In a separate report, Council also resolved to seek the necessary approvals to restore a number of damaged beach accesses affected by coastal erosion at Sisters Beach.

The same weather events in July and August resulted in erosion of the frontal dune north of Irby Boulevard, Sisters Beach, affecting some of the existing beach access points. A budget amendment of $83,050 was approved for this work.

Successful notices of motion included consideration for installing E-Waste Recycling units as part of the current Waste Services Review, requesting Parks and Wildlife to complete audits of beach front properties at Sisters Beach earlier than planned and for Council to prioritise the drafting of a Communications Strategy.
