Waratah Community Board established

23 February 2018

Waratah Wynyard Council is leading the way in consultative Local Government by establishing the first Community Board in Tasmania and one of the few in the country.

During Tourism Development work conducted by Council in conjunction with the community last year, Waratah was identified as a centre of exceptional potential but held back by a lack of cohesive leadership in the community and limited relationship with Council.

The subsequent report identified the creation of a Community Board in Waratah functioning with the support of Council and focussed on achieving a Community Plan would provide an opportunity for the Waratah community to realise its tourism and community potential.

"The process that has been undertaken in Waratah from September to November 2017 is a first for Australia," Waratah-Wynyard Mayor Robby Walsh said.

"It establishes a new relationship of trust between the community and Council through a proposed Board of local leadership endorsed and supported by Council."

The Community Plan and Board Charter were adopted at Council's February meeting and Council is now seeking Expressions of Interest from enthusiastic members of the community to form the Waratah Community Board. Councillor Kevin Hyland has been endorsed as the elected representative for the Waratah Community Board.

The Board will have five appointed members. including the Chairperson. Each member will be appointed for a three-year term coinciding with the term of the current Waratah Community Plan.

Council is looking for people who are committed to their community, are willing to work as part of a team and diverse backgrounds to join the Board.

David Hammond of Hammond Robertson Ltd is working closely with Council to develop the board. Mr Hammons has a breadth of experience and expertise and was instrumental in the development of Community Boards in New Zealand.

The Waratah Community Plan, Waratah Community Board Charter and an Expression of Interest forms are available on the Council's website or at the Council Offices in Wynyard and Waratah.

The Expression of Interest forms should be addressed to the General Manager forwarded to Council via email to council@warwyn.tas.gov.au or by mail to PO Box 168, Wynyard 7325 to be received no later than 5.00pm on Friday 16 March 2018.
