Waratah-Wynyard communities celebrate Australia Day

Wake up with an Aussie breakfast of billy tea and damper at the Waratah-Wynyard Council’s Australia Day Breakfast, to be held in the Gutteridge Gardens from 8am, Sunday, January 26.

Awards and citizenships, including the Citizen of the Year, will be announced at 9am.

Lesley Dick will perform a traditional Aboriginal spiritual cleansing ceremony in the gardens after the announcements and awards are given.

“Australia Day is a day to reflect on our shared history, with both its highs and its lows,” Waratah-Wynyard Mayor Robby Walsh said.

“For our newest citizens that will be a very young history, while for others in our community it’s a history that stretches back many thousands of years.

“It’s a day when we celebrate our community and nation and get the opportunity to publicly recognise those who have given back to the community when they are honoured with an Australia Day Award.”

This year’s Australia Day Ambassador and guest speaker is John Zeckendorf.

In 2010 John set himself a challenge to climb the world’s seven summits. After reaching the top of peaks in Antarctica, Africa, North America, and South America, he became the first Tasmanian to reach the summit of Everest in 2017.

Along with the classic Aussie bush breakfast, pancakes and coffee will also be on offer, while the kids can enjoy the giant chess board and free face painting.

The community at Sisters Beach will celebrate with Australia Day by the Creek – with music, a BBQ, stalls, kids’ activities and a Colour Run. Festivities will run from noon until about 3pm. Entries for the Colour Run will be accepted on the day.
