A recent sale of public land in Wynyard will be used to build much-needed social housing in the municipality.
Following a public land disposal process undertaken late last year, Council, at its April meeting, agreed to sell the property to Centacare Evolve Housing for the development of much-needed housing in the Waratah-Wynyard municipal area.
“Council is committed to sustainable actions, and that extends to socially responsible decisions,” Acting Mayor Dr Mary Duniam said.
“Demand for social housing clearly shows a need for properties within our community, with the general aged cohort (25 – 55 years old) among the most stressed.
“The land at Martin St was previously an underutilised asset, and we are happy Centacare Evolve Housing’s expression of interest will assist in meeting those needs.”
Centacare Evolve Housing plans to construct nine two-bedroom dwellings at the site.
“Centacare Evolve Housing is committed to increasing the supply of social housing throughout regional Tasmania,” said Ben Wilson, CEO, Centacare Evolve Housing.
“Waratah-Wynyard Council, in particular, has a demonstrable need and we welcome the opportunity to increase supply to the area and commend Council for its proactivity in addressing this need.”
“Council is supportive of the Tasmania Government’s initiative to increase social housing in the state,” Acting Mayor Duniam said.
“This development is expected to provide value to the community and will go some way in assisting to bridge the gap between supply and demand for social housing in our municipal area.”
