Waratah-Wynyard Council gives notice of its intention to close Austin Street at the intersection of Jenner Street, Wynyard, under Section 14 of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982.
The closure of Austin Street at the Jenner Street intersection was identified in the Wynyard Sports Precinct Master Plan as a key measure to improve safety for precinct users and provide a safe connection between the western and eastern sides of the precinct.
A Traffic Impact Assessment considered alternative measures such as speed reduction and traffic calming, but concluded that closure best achieved the objectives of safety and connectivity.
Following community consultation and a three-month trial period (July–November 2024), Council noted that while some residents raised concerns about inconvenience, travel time, and increased traffic on nearby streets, the technical assessment confirmed that the road network can accommodate these changes. Closure remains the recommended option to deliver a safer, better-connected sporting precinct.
