New Yacht Club to sail ahead as Council awards tender

The completion of Waratah-Wynyard Council’s multi-million-dollar waterfront upgrade is one step closer after the tender was awarded by Council this week.

The final stage of the Wynyard Waterfront & Environs Masterplan – the Multi-Purpose Facility and Wynyard Yacht Club – will soon commence after the tender was awarded to Stubbs Construction at Monday night’s Special Council meeting.

The new multi-use events space, community building and club house is designed to be an event hub for the community with a function space, meeting rooms, club rooms, catering areas and toilet and shower facilities.

“We are planning for Wynyard’s future and along with the Waterfront Development, the new Yacht Club project has positive implications for economic development and tourism and will also support healthy communities and make Wynyard a more attractive place to work, live and play,” Waratah-Wynyard Mayor Robby Walsh said.

“The Wynyard Yacht Club has consistently produced champion sailors, and we are excited to put up a project that provides new facilities, more storage and a café and function room space that is available to the whole community,” Mayor Walsh said.

“We’re thrilled to provide our active boating community with an upgraded facility that also enlivens the foreshore precinct and offers opportunities for a new events space.”

The building will be used year-round by the Wynyard Yacht Club, Tasmanian Canoe Club, Marine Rescue and other groups.

“The Wynyard Yacht Club is looking forward to the construction of the multi-use facility at the mouth of the Inglis River which will become a home for the club and its associate organisation, the Tasmanian Canoe Club,” said Commodore of Wynyard Yacht Club, Neal Rodwell.

“And as a community facility, the club is looking forward to sharing the venue for local community building projects and events.”

The club will continue organising competitive sailing including future State and National regattas from the new venue, as well as host events such as Surf Lifesaving Tasmania’s Volunteer Marine Rescue Unit and Sailability Tasmania programs.
