Local Government Elections – October 2022

The Waratah-Wynyard Council is responsible for representing the interests of our community by delivering local services and infrastructure.

The upcoming local government elections provide you with the opportunity to become a councillor, or elect councillors, who you think will best represent you and your community.

The Waratah-Wynyard municipal area has eight elected members, including the Mayor, that represent the community.

Voting in local government elections is now compulsory. Further information can be found from the Local Government Association of Tasmania [1] and the Tasmanian Electoral Commission [2].

WHO CAN VOTE?

Are you on the State electoral roll?

If you are currently on the State electoral roll, you are automatically on the local government roll for the municipal area (council) in which your enrolled address is located.

If you are eligible to be on the State electoral roll and wish to enrol, check, or update an existing enrolment you may:

  • Phone the Tasmanian Electoral Commission on free call  1800 801 701 [12], who can mail an enrolment form to you. 

To be enrolled correctly, your completed enrolment form must be received before the close of rolls for the election at 6pm on Thursday 8 September 2022.  

What if I have a shack or a shop — or if I’m not an Australian citizen? 

You may be eligible to be on the local government (General Manager’s) roll if: 

  • you own or occupy land in the Waratah-Wynyard municipality but do not live in the municipality

  • you are a resident in the Waratah-Wynyard municipality but are not eligible for the state electoral roll

  • you are the nominated representative of a corporate body which owns or occupies land in the Waratah-Wynyard municipal area.

  • Enrollment on the General Manager’s Roll is not automatic.

To enroll under these special provisions you need to complete the enrolment form, download the forms below and return to Council. 

These forms are also available at the Waratah-Wynyard Council Chambers building, located at 21 Saunders Street, Wynyard.

To be enrolled under these special provisions your completed enrolment form must be submitted to the Waratah-Wynyard Council before the close of rolls on Thursday 8 September 2022.

If you are eligible for inclusion on the General Manager’s Roll, written confirmation of your inclusion will be provided. You will also be advised in writing if you are not eligible for the Roll.
