Free Bin Latches Now Available to Help Reduce Windblown Litter

Residents can collect a free bin latch from Council Reception to help keep bin lids secure and reduce windblown litter

Waratah-Wynyard Council is encouraging residents to help reduce windblown litter by collecting a free bin latch, thanks to the Cradle Coast Waste Management Group (CCWMG).

Designed to keep bin lids securely closed on windy collection days, the latches help prevent recycling from blowing out of bins and reduce the chance of soft plastics or other waste escaping into the environment. The latch automatically releases when the collection truck lifts and empties the bin, meaning no additional action is required on collection day.

A limited number of 500 bin latches are available to Waratah-Wynyard residents.

How to collect your free bin latch

Residents can collect a free bin latch by:

  • Visiting Waratah-Wynyard Council Reception during business hours.
  • Scanning the QR code and completing the online registration form.
  • Taking home the latch and fitting it using the supplied instructions.

As part of the initiative, participants will be invited to complete a short survey after using the latch for a few months. The feedback will help evaluate how effective the latches are at reducing litter caused by windy conditions.

Bin latches are available while stocks last.
