Flood mitigation projects designed to minimise risk of inundation

Flood mitigation works at both Big Creek and Port Creek, Wynyard, will soon start, with the projects being advertised for design and construct tender this week.

Both creeks have historically inundated several nearby residents within high rainfall conditions. To minimise the risk of urban flooding, it was determined that a project to mitigate inundation under prescribed rainfall events at Big Creek and Port Creek commence.

Acting Waratah-Wynyard Mayor, Dr Mary Duniam, said Council had been seeking a flood mitigation solution for the Port Creek area since the floods of 2016.

“Council has been successful in our application for funds under the National Flood Mitigation Infrastructure Program. We are grateful for the additional federal funding that will assist the projects’ delivery,” Acting Mayor Duniam said.

“The funding will provide a range of benefits to a wide number of stakeholders and allows works to occur to minimise the risk of urban flooding; allow for proper stormwater drainage of some properties and enable confidence for future development of the area.”

Council has opted for a Design and Construct tender for these projects, which will be funded through an interest-free loan from the State Government and the Port Creek project also having the $1million grant from the Federal Government.

The contractor and project timelines for both Big Creek and Port Creek projects will be updated after the tender submission period closes. Please go to www.warwyn.tas.gov.au/projects [1] for more details.
