Waratah-Wynyard Council is planning for the future of Somerset’s Cam River Reserve by developing a five-year Master Plan.
The Master Plan has been developed with the intent of providing a roadmap for the future development and management of the public space, addressing the key opportunities and challenges experienced within the reserve.
“We heard from the community the existing park was well-used and favoured for its natural beauty and opportunities to undertake activities like swimming and walking, but that it needed updating,” Waratah-Wynyard Mayor Robby Walsh said.
Community consultation commenced on the October 16, 2019 and was finalised on November 3, 2019, with safety being listed as a high priority among the feedback received. Other concerns raised included site maintenance, losing open space and changing the character of the reserve.
“In addition to possible shifting community expectations, the Cam River Reserve is changing,” Mayor Walsh said.
The proposed playground development at Anzac Park and the renewal of the vehicular bridge over the Cam River have the potential to alter how the space is used.”
“The Master Plan captures the community’s ideas and shows how the reserve will be transformed whilst continuing to be a social space that celebrates the natural qualities of the reserve,” Mayor Walsh said.
“This is your vision and we want your feedback.”
The Master Plan builds upon the previous Cam River Reserve Landscape Development Plan which has been refreshed to ensure current community expectations align with the future direction of the reserve.
Whilst the master plan provides a unified future vision for the area and demonstrates a commitment to fulfilling the projects listed, timing of project implementation will depend on funding and resource availability and will need to consider external influences such as the timing of the State Government works for the bridge replacement.
