Exciting New Era for Boat Harbour Beach—Construction of Master Plan Set to Commence on November 5

Waratah-Wynyard Council is thrilled to announce that construction of the highly anticipated Boat Harbour Beach Master Plan project is set to commence on 5th November 2024, marking the beginning of a new chapter for this iconic Tasmanian destination. Following a competitive tender process, Fairbrother Pty Ltd has been awarded the contract to deliver the $11.7 million project, which promises to revitalise the foreshore and create a vibrant community hub.

The project is funded by Council ($5.5m including contingencies) in partnership with the Australian Government ($4.5m under the Priority Community Infrastructure Program) and the Tasmanian State Government ($2.7m) and it is expected to take approximately 12 months to complete the project works.

This visionary plan, developed with extensive community consultation, reflects the voices of locals who were instrumental in shaping the future of Boat Harbour Beach. The project will deliver a state-of-the-art Surf Life Saving Club, new community centre, upgraded public amenities, and significant improvements to carparks, roads and the overall foreshore landscape. With a strong focus on environmental sustainability and preserving the natural beauty of the area; the Master Plan will enhance liveability and support future generations.

Mayor Duniam expressed her excitement for the upcoming developments, highlighting the extensive community consultation that has shaped the Master Plan.

“This project is the culmination of years of collaborative effort between Council, the Boat Harbour Surf Life Saving Club, local businesses and our dedicated community members,” Mayor Duniam said.

“We have listened carefully to the needs and aspirations of our residents to ensure that the design is both environmentally conscious and reflective of our local history and unique coastal character.”

The Boat Harbour Surf Life Saving Club has been instrumental in driving community consultation, ensuring that the new facilities meet the needs of the local community now and into the future.

“The community’s input has been invaluable,” Mayor Duniam emphasised. “This Master Plan reflects the voices of Boat Harbour Beach residents, capturing their vision for a sensitive design that preserves the area’s natural beauty and strengthens our community bonds.”

Senator Anne Urquhart said that she is proud that the Federal Labor Government has supported this significant project, and she congratulated the Council on bringing the project to this important stage.

“Boat Harbour is one of the most beautiful beaches in Tasmania and is a beacon for tourists. The new Surf Life Saving Club, Café and public spaces will take Boat Harbour to the next level.”

“This project improves amenities for local residents and provides a place for community activities. It will also mean that Boat Harbour can warmly welcome the many people who visit this iconic Tasmanian location each year.”

Annie Triffett, president of the Boat Harbour Beach Surf Life Saving Club (BHBSLSC), said the club is very excited about the recent announcement of the successful tender from Fairbrother’s Construction to commence the building of the new surf club and the implementation of the Boat Harbour Beach Master Plan.

“The BHBSLSC is very appreciative of the efforts and direction that the Waratah-Wynyard Council has taken in bringing this to fruition. We look forward to having this significant community asset being completed; allowing us to continue to supply our Surf Life Saving patrols and to bring our local community into this community space.”

“On behalf of the BHBSLSC and local community we wish to congratulate the Council and its staff on persisting with the inception, design, funding and now construction of this community asset.”

The Master Plan also addresses long-standing challenges, including parking, stormwater management and pedestrian safety. The design reconfigures public spaces to create a seamless connection between the beach, new facilities, and surrounding landscapes, while maintaining the unique coastal character that makes Boat Harbour Beach a beloved destination.

The community-driven vision behind the Master Plan will ensure that Boat Harbour Beach remains a special place for generations to come, as a destination for tourists and a vibrant hub for local life.
