Join us for Australia Day at Gutteridge Gardens!

Monday, 26 January 2026, 8am - 11am, Gutteridge Gardens (5 Goldie St, Wynyard)

Celebrate Australia Day with the community at Gutteridge Gardens! Enjoy a free breakfast (donations encouraged!) provided by the community, experience local live entertainment, and join in lawn games for all ages. The event also includes the Awards & Citizenship Ceremony, recognising outstanding local citizens and welcoming new citizens into the community. Bring family and friends to start the day with food, fun, and celebration of our community spirit.

Australia Day Awards

Each year, we celebrate outstanding individuals and groups in our community through the Waratah-Wynyard Australia Day Awards. These awards recognise the dedication, achievements, and contributions of those who make a difference in our region.

In 2026, the event will be held on 26th January at Gutteridge Gardens, Wynyard. Entry is free.

Australia Day 2026 - Award Recipients

Jonathan Vincent

Citizen of the Year
Jonathan “Jono” Vincent is a true inspiration to young people in our community. Volunteering countless hours at the Boat Harbour Beach Surf Life Saving Club where he teaches vital water safety skills and encourages healthy, active lifestyles. Jono also played a pivotal role in bringing the Sisters Beach Skate Park to life, actively consulting with youth to ensure their voices were heard. His leadership and dedication as a former President of the Sisters Beach Community Association have left a lasting impact on our region.

Belle Lohrey

Young Citizen of the Year
Belle Lohrey’s achievements in cheerleading are extraordinary. Just before turning 18, she coached her youth novice team, The Wynyard Wildcatz, to become Tasmanian State Champions, earning a bid to compete in Orlando, Florida, where they became International Champions. Now 19, Belle is Head Coach at Burnie Tigers Cheerleading guiding six competitive teams, while representing Australia at the Cheerleading World Championships. Her dedication, leadership, and passion continue to inspire young athletes across the region.

Permission to Trespass

Community Event of the Year
Presented to Business Northwest. On behalf of the organisation, Cyndia Hilliger and Wendy Page accepted the award, earned for its success in celebrating creativity, connection and local culture through winter events across Wynyard and Table Cape. Created by six local business owners, Permission to Trespass brings the community together through unique experiences, from the Moonlight Stories lighthouse projection to the Gather and Glow Main Street Market. Over three years, it has transformed winter into a season of celebration, supporting local enterprise and showcasing the region’s creativity and spirit.

Australia Day 2025 - Award Recipients

Lynette Grey

Citizen of the Year

Lynette Grey has been named Citizen of the Year for her outstanding voluntary contributions to the Waratah-Wynyard community. A retired sewing teacher, Lyn dedicates her time to teaching basic sewing and machine skills at weekly workshops with Farm It Forward Tasmania. Her classes provide participants with valuable skills, foster confidence, improve mental health, and create a supportive, welcoming environment.

Willow Cummins

Young Citizen of the Year

Willow Cummins has been awarded Young Citizen of the Year for her remarkable achievement in winning the National Legacy Junior Public Speaking Competition, held on November 18 in Ballarat, Victoria.

Willow’s speech, titled “To Survive or to Thrive,” was inspired by the Legacy value of mateship and explored the evolution of the world and its challenges. She is the first Tasmanian public school student to win this prestigious competition and the first Tasmanian winner since 2006, showcasing her exceptional talent and dedication.

Wynyard Christmas Parade

Community Event of the Year

The Wynyard Christmas Parade, organised annually by the Wynyard Lions Club, has been named the Community Event of the Year for its vibrant celebration of the festive season. Held in Wynyard’s main streets, this beloved event brings the community together with creative floats, live entertainment, and a joyful atmosphere that captures the spirit and creativity of the Waratah-Wynyard community.
