Each year, we celebrate outstanding individuals and groups in our community through the Waratah-Wynyard Australia Day Awards. These awards recognise the dedication, achievements, and contributions of those who make a difference in our region.
2025 Recipients
Lynette Grey
Lynette Grey has been named Citizen of the Year for her outstanding voluntary contributions to the Waratah-Wynyard community. A retired sewing teacher, Lyn dedicates her time to teaching basic sewing and machine skills at weekly workshops with Farm It Forward Tasmania. Her classes provide participants with valuable skills, foster confidence, improve mental health, and create a supportive, welcoming environment.
Willow Cummins
Willow Cummins has been awarded Young Citizen of the Year for her remarkable achievement in winning the National Legacy Junior Public Speaking Competition, held on November 18 in Ballarat, Victoria.
Willow’s speech, titled “To Survive or to Thrive,” was inspired by the Legacy value of mateship and explored the evolution of the world and its challenges. She is the first Tasmanian public school student to win this prestigious competition and the first Tasmanian winner since 2006, showcasing her exceptional talent and dedication.
Wynyard Christmas Parade
The Wynyard Christmas Parade, organised annually by the Wynyard Lions Club, has been named the Community Event of the Year for its vibrant celebration of the festive season. Held in Wynyard’s main streets, this beloved event brings the community together with creative floats, live entertainment, and a joyful atmosphere that captures the spirit and creativity of the Waratah-Wynyard community.
