About Wynyard and Surrounds

Full of unforgettable experiences…

With an abundance of diverse and contrasting experiences you can weave together the threads of your own colourful journey around Wynyard and surrounds.

Whether you want to immerse yourself in local history and culture, explore secret natural wonders, relax, shop and eat great local produce or get wild and rugged – you can do it all in our beautiful patch of Tassie!

With weekly markets, trendy cafes, the award-winning Wonders of Wynyard Information Centre, Veteran Car Display and Art Gallery, stunning walks and scenic drives to Table Cape Lighthouse, Fossil Bluff and Boat Harbour Beach, Wynyard and surrounds has everything you need to relax, unwind and recharge your batteries.

Wynyard is renowned for it’s spectacular springtime tulip displays, extending as far as the eye can see like giant floral catwalks on the imposing volcanic plug known as Table Cape, as well as throughout the gardens and streetscapes of the township.

Just 10 minutes from Wynyard, you can drive to Table Cape lighthouse – or park at the lookout and take the walking track along the rugged cliff face. With the crashing ocean below, and jaw dropping views as far as the eye can see, this short and gentle walk will remind you how good it feels to be alive.  Interpretive signage tells the history of the lighthouse, constructed in the 1880’s, and the associated development of a community based around its existence. From September – April guided tours inside the lighthouse are also available. Why not take the short (but memorable) drive along Tollymore Rd towards Boat Harbour Beach, which will take you along a stunning scenic coastal route dotted with boutique accommodation, rich productive farmland and the award-winning Alchymia Distillery.

For the geological buff, the amazing 275million year old sandstone cliffs of Fossil Bluff offer an abundance of fossils to discover. It’s also the site where Australia’s oldest fossil marsupial was uncovered in the mid-19th century – estimated to be approximately 25 million years old. At low tide visitors can expect to see and touch several hundred different types of fossils preserved in the rocks.

Just 20 minutes’ drive from Wynyard, Boat Harbour Beach has been recognised as one of Australia’s Top 10 Beaches, and a visit to the crescent shaped cove with crystal clear waters will not disappoint.

Neighbouring Sisters Beach is even more low-key and secluded. Attractive to walkers year round, the spectacular coastal wilderness of Rocky Cape National Park surrounds a scatter of homes and beach houses along three kilometres of white sands and azure waters.

Rocky Cape National Park is full of surprises any time of the year – short and long walks, big views across Bass Strait to the bright wildflowers of its coastal heathlands.

Located 12km east of Wynyard on the Cam River , which forms the border with the City of Burnie, Somerset has excellent recreational facilities and a traditional village shopping centre – including a butcher, bakery, supermarkets and newsagent and boutique specialty stores. Bordered by river and sea, it’s no surprise Somerset is popular for water-based recreational activities such as boating, fishing, kayaking and swimming. Somerset Beach is a favourite exercise beach and is home to an active Surf Life Saving Club and a spectacular All-Abilities playground at ANZAC Park.

The historic township of Waratah is a must-see destination on the doorstep of the Tarkine wilderness – Australia’s largest temperate rainforest – and just 40 min drive from Cradle Mountain National Park. Although it’s an easy day trip from Wynyard, with a spectacular waterfall in the middle of town, numerous easy access scenic walks and drives, caravan park and camping ground, golf course, historic buildings, interpretation centre and a history museum, you may want to stay a little longer and explore this treasure…
