Wynyard Community Garden
In 2003, at the request of a group of interested gardeners, the Waratah-Wynyard Council, along with the Lions Club of Wynyard were instrumental in providing a site and in erecting a steel fence (1600 m2).
Located in Johnson Place behind the Wynyard Sports Centre in Austin Street, people of all ages are welcome to become members of the Wynyard Community Garden or just to drop by and see what’s happening.
The garden was established on a site noted for its poor fertility. However, since 2006, the construction of raised garden beds along with plenty of organic material has seen it reinvigorated. A huge variety of vegetables, fruit, and berries are grown on the site. Since the garden’s inception the demographic has gradually changed from school children (who now run their own kitchen gardens) to the more senior of our citizens, as well as catering for intellectually disabled young adults.
In 2007 the original Garden studio was lost, due to an arson attack. However, in 2009 we were fortunate enough to have the skills and involvement of a retired builder who assisted in the design and build of a new shelter. We received several grants totalling $20 000 from the Tasmanian Community Fund and the Volunteer Grants Program, and with our intrepid band of volunteers, the shelter was completed in 2013.
The Wynyard Lions, Rotary club, Wynyard Garden Club, North West Residential Support Service and ongoing Council support, have assisted us with managing our finances as well as man-power and donations towards maintenance. These partnerships have also seen several introductory workshops for aspiring gardeners held at the garden, as well as kitchen garden sessions – and then there is also the informal learning from each other that takes place over a spade or cuppa in the new shelter. We have also been host to the Tasmanian Garden Guru, Peter Cundall, who visited the garden in 2013/14/15.
Aspiring members must attend the Council’s Occupational Health and Safety Session – which will insure all volunteers from the ages of 15 – 90. They will be allocated a gate key for a small deposit, returnable on leaving. Members of the garden can drop in at any time and work on their plots.
There is a policy of no spraying of any kind at the garden.
All our members meet monthly on the last Monday of each month at 12 o’clock at the Council Chambers meeting room when available or at the garden.
Annual membership is $5
Growing food is a great way to combat climate change; encourage food security; improve our health and save money. The garden also provides an opportunity for people to come together socially, and feel part of the wider community by giving their time to volunteering.
