Department of State Growth to carry out a planning study on the Bass Highway between Cooee to Wynyard

The Department of State Growth will carry out a planning study on the Bass Highway between Cooee to Wynyard, including assessments of the Cam River Bridge.

To understand some of the challenges faced by road users, State Growth will be undertaking traffic counts and a number of engineering surveys.

The details are as follows:

  • The traffic count will use cameras placed on the back of road signs (cameras are approximately the size of your hand so quite unobtrusive visually). Matrix Traffic and Transport Data are undertaking the traffic count surveys.
  • Data gathering will occur at both major intersections and along the length of the highway between Wynyard and Burnie on Wednesday 2 May 2018 with Thursday 3 May 2018 to be used as a back-up if for some reason the data count can’t be completed tomorrow (e.g. if there is an accident or one of the cameras doesn’t work the survey is re-run to ensure a complete data set is obtained). Cameras will be set up on Tuesday 1 May.

  • Specifics of the traffic count surveys are:
    • Turning movement surveys using cameras to count the number of cars doing each movement at an intersection
    • Origin-Destination surveys using cameras they match number plates at key locations to count the number of cars going from point A to point B
    • Travel time surveys, they drive up and down the highway (within a platoon of vehicles) measuring the travel times using GPS
