The Cradle Coast Authority and its member councils are participating in a pilot of the

Australian Government's Healthy Communities Initiative, funded by the Department of Health and Ageing

The Healthy Communities Initiative will help increase the Cradle Coast community's participation in healthy eating practices and lifestyles; improving the wellbeing of residents at risk of chronic disease. The total funding available to the region via the three-year initiative is up to $976,000.

There are three broad strategies to be implemented in the Cradle Coast region: (1) Reviewing and extending referral mechanisms between healthy lifestyle services including the use of non-traditional delivery channels. (2) Mapping reach, access and participant profile of existing health services to identify gaps and support the closure of any gaps. (3) Generating community support to implement lifestyle changes through education and awareness.

The Healthy Communities Initiative is targeted to our region's needs and is being delivered via non-traditional ways of addressing health issues. The program takes a prevention focus rather than a disease focus and will explore Local Government and community networks in the delivery of health and lifestyle modification services.

The Cradle Coast Authority has engaged a Healthy Communities Coordinator, Bev Hayhurst, to lead regional delivery of the program. Bev works closely with Community Development Managers and related staff in the nine Local Councils to implement community-based projects. The Initiative is supported by a Steering Committee comprised of representatives from Local Councils, GP North West, Rural Clinical School, Department of Health and Human Services Population Health unit, NW Area Health Service and the Cradle Coast Authority.
